Why do a lot of lesbians have short hair?
This, like many of the questions we receive on this website, is a tricky one to answer. It’s impossible to know why many lesbians choose to cut their hair short, but we can certainly wager a few guesses. First, and perhaps most obviously, many lesbians cut their hair short because they identify as “butch”, and prefer the look that goes along with that label. This involves more “masculine” outfit choices (though we hesitate to use that term), and yes, a shorter hairstyle. Why do they identify as butch? The better question is, why not?
Our second guess is as good as the first one: maybe a lot of lesbians have short hair because they feel pressured to follow in the footsteps of millions of other lesbians before them. Isn’t that why we do most of what we do, after all? Most boys cut their hair short because that’s what all the other boys are doing. Christians go to church because that’s what Christians have been doing for centuries. We’re all sheep, so to speak.
Thirdly, f*$% society. I speak on behalf of a lot of lesbians when I say that society and all its heteronormativity is frustrating, to say the least. It’s possible that a great deal of gay women choose to cut their hair short simply to go against the grain – to speak out, albeit silently, against the expectations placed upon us as women.
